Malcesine
Malcesine is the main settlement along the narrow strip of flatter land on the eastern shore of Lake Garda running south from Riva del Garda through Torbole to Garda itself.
With its historic old town crowned by the Castello Scaligero it is one of the most attractive settlements on the entire Garda lake shoreline and has attracted writers and artists through the centuries who come to admire the panoramic lake views.
The medieval town with its cobbled streets is not just a historic location however. It is one of the centres for sailing and windsurfing on Lake Garda and the Monte Baldo cable car offers a stunning lake view from the top station, with descents on foot or via mountain bike.
Those who are looking for something a little less strenuous can try some of the local hikes to nearby areas like the Val di Sogno which combine trails through the olive groves with the possibility for a paddle in the lake on the walk back to Malcesine.
Scaliger Castle
The Scaliger Castle of Malcesine is a medieval castle, built on an even more ancient fortress, overlooking the Veronese side of Lake Garda.
In addition to its great historical and artistic value, the castle is also famous for the drawings and descriptions that Goethe made of it in his Italian Journey.
Today, the Scaliger Castle hosts the Museum of Natural History of Lake Garda and Mount Baldo. Due to its magical and suggestive atmosphere, it is often also rented for weddings.
